Holcim CKD Feasibility

Holcim New Zealand operates a cement manufacturing plant at Cape Foulwind, Westport, which produces approximately 500,000 tonnes of cement each year.

Process Flow was engaged by Holcim to investigate the feasibility of injecting Cement Kiln dust at a mid-kiln location. The project involved a complex mechanical rotating coupling with consideration for significant thermal expansion.

The plant is an operational plant with extreme environmental conditions and temperatures associated with cement processing. Consideration had to be given in the design to minimize down time during the construction phase.

The key to success was developing the scope of work in detail by visiting site and surveying the plant with the client representative during a maintenance outage. Discussions were also had with an associated construction company to understand the implications that would be encountered during the construction phase and to minimize risk.
